Baccus
The inspiration for this sculpture came from my love of
wine. The wood is rich and dark, much like the red wines
that I that I love so much. The piece itself is an abstract
male torso. The detailed symbolism include the spiral which
makes referance to wines' ability to intoxicate as well
as something which has long been with us and promises to
go on forever. The waves, allude to passion and leaves,
being upward swept, generates a gesture reminescent of sun
worship. Three grapes at the top symbolize the forces of
heaven i.e. the father, son and holy ghost or the trinity.
The four grapes at the bottom make referance to the forces
of earth i.e. fire, earth, wind and water. The two groups,
in combination, acknowledge wine's depencancy on the forces
of both the heavens and of the earth.
